Maria G. Aguilera Nunez, MD

Dr. Maria G. Aguilera Nunez, a Licensed Psychiatric Physician, is an Associate Consultant at Lorio Forensics. She is a Board-Certified physician with national certification in Adult Psychiatry. She graduated from the University of Portland with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. She earned her Master of Science in that field from the University of Texas of El Paso. Dr. Aguilera Nunez earned her Medical Degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This was followed by a general psychiatry residency, and a prestigious Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Aguilera Nunez is a Psychiatrist at West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center where she leads a team of social work and nursing case managers to provide wrap-around services for Veterans with severe and persistent mental illness. In addition, she leads a range of community-based programs focused on behavioral health disparities.

In addition to her clinical and forensic expertise, Dr. Aguilera Nunez is bilingual and a native Spanish speaker—a skill that enhances her ability to serve diverse populations with cultural competence and linguistic fluency. She has worked with a range of clients beyond veterans, including transitional age youth, and women deemed not competent to stand trial. With over a decade of professional and academic accomplishments, she is recognized nationally for her leadership and contributions to the field. She is an active member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and the Southern California Psychiatric Society. Her work consistently emphasizes mental health equity, community engagement, and innovative treatment models. Dr. Aguilera Nunez has published extensively in the field, including work specific to Forensic Psychiatry, veteran populations, community engagement and interventions in medicine, and Implementing Depression Quality Improvement, among other topics.
